Dr John Ngan received his medical degree at the University of Hong Kong in 1982. After winning the Hong Kong Medical Association Prize, he joined the Department of Surgery at the Queen Mary Hospital to receive training in general surgery and urology. He obtained his Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh in 1985 and was appointed as Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Hong Kong. In 1988, he published his first paper on the use of stomach as a urinary bladder replacement in the reputable Journal of Urology.
In 1989, he furthered his training in adult and pediatric urology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. During training, he was elected an AUA/AFUD (American Urological Association/American Foundation of Urological Disease) National Scholar and was awarded a research grant in the study of prostate cancer. In 1995, he was one of the 12 urologists vied by top urology programs in the United States to specialize in the field of Pediatric Urology. As a result, he trained with Dr Michael Mitchell at the University of Washington, studying principles and practice of constructive surgery in children bladder and genitalia. During his tenure, he was a visiting professor to the University of British Columbia.
In 1997, he was invited by the University of British Columbia to begin a pediatric urology program at the British Columbia Women’s and Children’s Hospital. There he received 2 grants to fund his laboratory research in bladder development with 3 full-time staff. He was also the Director of Urodynamics Laboratory.
Dr Ngan, took advantage of the reunification of Hong Kong with China and began his practice in Hong Kong in 1999, hoping to apply his skills in his own country. He holds admission rights and urology procedure privileges, including lithotripsy, assisted-reproduction, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, in all private hospitals. He is an Honorary Urology Consultant at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. Other than practicing medicine, he maintains active programs in education and charity. He is a founding member of the Matilda Children’s Foundation and MedArt’s China Orphan Outreach program. These programs offer free surgeries to children with complex conditions.
